“Step Across the Border”, rated by Cahiers du Cinema as one of the 100 most influential films in cinema history, is a 90 minute documentary on the work of composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith.
An example of Cinema Direct, the filmmakers dubbed the film a “celluloid improvisation” which jumps between moments of performance, travel and rest in order to build up an impression of Frith’s life and work.
In fragments shot between the USA, Europe and Japan, Frith becomes the frame through which diverse incidental sound and music from private and public performances are presented.
