A rare chance to see Sheng Jie (gogoj), a key figure and one of the most distinctive voices in Beijing’s experimental music scene. Sheng Jie will be joined by Beachers and Massimo Magee. There will be solos, duos, and possibly a trio. Presented by Dusty Ballz.

A veteran cellist in the Chinese underground music scene, her work spans drone music, modern composition, free improvisation, and field recordings. Her album ‘Review’ (Dusty Ballz, 2023)—recorded for and during Beijing’s COVID-19 lockdown—was one of The Quietus’ best records of the first half of 2023.
Sheng Jie is also a renowned multimedia artist. She founded the Beijing-based audiovisual art studio Shanavlab in 2010. Her works have been exhibited across Asia and beyond.

Beachers
Beachers is the project of London-based musician and writer Daryl Worthington. The project works in the crossovers between accidental and composed sounds, hi and lo-fi audio, with a particular interest in the beauty of the mundane. This takes an array of approaches, from explorations of the materiality and tactility of radio signals through to analogue synthesis, field recording and cassette collages and sample-based computer music. Beachers releases have appeared on czaszka (rec.), Shimmering Moods, Fractal Meat, Wabi-Sabi Tapes and his own ineffectual suns label. His latest release, ‘Horns Of Death’ (ineffectual suns, 2025) explores a replica fox-hunting horn, processing and twisting its rattles, squeaks and blasts through computer and sampler.

Dusty Ballz
Dusty Ballz is a London-based label that releases Chinese underground music on cassette tapes. The term originates in an old Soviet joke, which somehow still speaks to the situation today.
