Interrogation Trio
Massimo Magee – reeds
Chie Nagai – voice
Joshua Weitzel – shamisen
A meeting of old friends and close collaborators, this evening presents the first concert of the Chie Nagai, Massimo Magee and Joshua Weitzel since 2020, and a return to Hundred Years Gallery and London after almost a decade for Chie and Joshua. Total improvisation.
Kassel-based musicians and sound artists Chie Nagai and Joshua Weitzel collaborate in various contexts for over fifteen years and have developed a musical language based on exploring overtones and contrasts in textures, often juxtaposing simple actions with virtuoso techniques. In exploring both space and interactions, Nagai and Weitzel play improvised music that is influenced by practices of sound art as much as it is by classical music, Japanese traditions and DIY-aesthetics. They often work with guests, having collaborated with artists from all over the world, including Akira Sakata, Taku Sugimoto, Toshimaru Nakamura, Peer Schlechta, Yumiko Tanaka, Ulrike Lentz, Hisaharu Teruuchi, and Nicola L. Hein. In 2025 they realised the radiophonic composition ‘Kassoro no Kigi’, commissioned by Hr2 Kultur Radio.
Massimo Magee is a writer, artist and musician based in London. His work is wide-ranging, including multimedia fiction, text art, sound and image audiovisual digital art pieces, digital visual art, experimental music (improvised, composed and everything in between), free jazz, radically extended saxophony, electronics, data manipulation and much more. He is the creator of a form of art he calls Audiovisual Digital Abstraction. In improvised music, he has worked with Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Marc Edwards, Eddie Prévost, Tony Irving, Ken Ikeda, and many more.
