The Alex Ward Quintet features several of the most exciting UK-based musicians currently working in the fields of composed and improvised music, and was formed in 2013 to perform Alex’s extended composition “Glass Shelves And Floor”. (The quintet’s debut album, comprising live and studio performances of this work, is due for release on Copepod Records in April 2015.) The program for this concert will consist of a set of new pieces, including compositions scored for the whole ensemble and for smaller sub-groupings drawn from the line-up. The group’s music conjures up a soundworld evocative of contemporary chamber music and brings to it the vigour and raw exploration of free improvisation, as well as elements bespeaking an askew-but-fond relationship to the “jazz” tradition.
