Cath Roberts (baritone saxophone)
Cath Roberts’ work explores free improvisation, composition and the music at their meeting point. Her primary outlet as a composer and improviser on baritone saxophone is the quintet Sloth Racket, which has toured widely and released several albums. She leads ten piece improvising ensemble Favourite Animals, and has a long-standing duo with guitarist Anton Hunter, Ripsaw Catfish. As bandmate, Cath is a member of Madwort Sax Quartet, Vole, Article XI and Alex Ward’s Item 10 amongst other groups. She co-runs LUME with Dee Byrne, producing concerts, tours and festivals since 2013 and releasing music on an offshoot label, Luminous.
Corey Mwamba (vibraphone)
Born and based in Derby, Corey Mwamba’s commitment to jazz and improvised music in Britain and Ireland drives all aspects of his work, whether through composition, playing, or promoting new music. Corey predominantly plays vibraphone; he also plays dulcimer and uses audio processing software. He is recognised as a highly creative improviser and composer working across a wide range of jazz and contemporary music. Mwamba’s distinctive approach and tone is instantly recognisable in any context: a potent blend of pure sound, highly melodic phrases and ethereal textures; barely whispered chords and ear-piercing robotic screams. Corey won a PRSF/Jerwood Foundation Take Five artist development award in 2007; was short-listed for the Innovation category in the BBC Jazz Awards in 2008; and received nominations for “Rising Star on Vibraphone” in the 62nd, 63rd, 64th, 65th, and 66th DownBeat Annual Critics’ Polls.
Olie Brice (double bass)
Olie Brice is a double bassist, improviser and composer. He leads the Olie Brice Quintet, described by Richard Williams as “one of the most interesting and satisfying bands on the current UK scene”. The Olie Brice Quintet have released two albums, ‘Immune to Clockwork’ in 2014 and ‘Day After Day’ in 2017. He also leads an improvising trio, the Somersaults Trio, featuring Tobias Delius and Mark Sanders. Brice is also in demand as a collaborator and band-member. He has appeared with musicians including Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker, Tony Malaby, Ingrid Laubrock and Ken Vandermark, among many others, and is a member of bands led by Dee Byrne, Alex Ward and Loz Speyer.
