Breathe Is a body of work, an action, a viewpoint, a stand, looking at our urban environment and interactions both positive and negative with the
trees of London. The project begun during mid pandemic, highlighted the importance of trees for multiple reasons, a series of large format pinhole photos created as abstracts with visual parallels to lungs; the damaged branch network mirroring those of covid sufferers.
The work expanded to include street trees and local parks, a typology of brutally pollarded specimens and the most recent documentation of the infamous, “Oak tree massacre” of South London. The urban forest in all its glory and tragedy presented as darkroom prints, pigment prints and a variety of alternative photographic processes. Limited edition handmade zines, cards and printmaking will also be available.
Ky Lewis, is a multi-disciplinary artist and curator based in South London with a practice currently centred on experimental and alt photography and printmaking.
Though process is very much part of her work her interests are in story telling the intersection of connection, human to environment, landscape, history and cycles of life. She enjoys working on more than one project at a time. Long form projects, conceptual and unique works, working both in a darkroom and on location her images are imbued with atmosphere and emotions redolent of her time in the landscape. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows with awards from PX3;Denis Rousell; Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, TIFA; NYC4PA; Fix Photo Festival. Recent selected exhibitions include “Enlighten” Griffin Museum of Photography 2022, Boston; “Svitlo” Looiersgracht 60, Amsterdam2022; WOW Festival, Royal Festival Hall Southbank, London 2022; “Cluster”, OXO Tower, London 2022; “Other Ways Of Seeing”, Plaxall Gallery, New York.
