‘HUKOU is a participatory event that investigates the Chinese migrant population’s anxiety and disorientation with their identity as a result of ‘hukou’, household registry policy in China. It is a legal document produced by the administrative organ of the State in charge of household administration to record and retain basic information about the population living in the household. It is also a proof of identity for each of our citizens.
‘As a migrant Chinese student living in London who feels conflicted as a result of the hukou policy, this project seeks to facilitate reflection on hukou – a policy that is supposed to be a form of documentation but has instead exacerbated the division between people’. Wenjun Ding
