Human is a group exhibition that aims to change the way we perceive art’s oldest subject. The show questions what it means to be human in contemporary society – encouraging us to look anew at ourselves, each other and the world we live in.
Opening on Thursday 3rd of September from 7.00 as part of the First Thursdays Open Until Late organized by WhiteChapel Gallery.
Artists include: Chris Pilling, David Shackleton, Franzi Ehmer, Peter Rapp, Tommy Pilling, Tony Savas and Zoey Zhao.
The artists in Human revisit and update classical traditions of visual art, while drawing upon representations of the human body in contemporary culture. Remixing past and present, they transform that most familiar form – our species – in ways that surprise, unsettle and engage us.
The exhibition showcases varied artistic approaches and mediums, from intricate ink drawings, to street photography, etchings and oil paintings.
Bringing together new work by seven artists from around the globe, the show looks at themes including life, death, sexuality and humour. Importantly, it also explores the inner psychological complexity that lies within all of us, and the ways it is manifested in the world around us.
