Music : Apulian Jazz Project – The Dinner Party / Frequency Disasters. Thursday 14th October 19:30

The Dinner Party : Vladimir Miller ( piano), Pierpaulo Martino ( double bass), Adrian Northover ( saxophone)
with special guest Stefano Luigi Mangia (voice)

The Dinner Party is a collective free improvising trio comprised of Anglo-Russian pianist Vladimir Miller (Moscow Composers Orchestra), Italian double-bassist Pierpaolo Martino – a founding member of avant-jazz ensembles Mondegreen and Machine3 – and British saxophonist Adrian Northover known for The Remote Viewers and London Improvisers Orchestra. Unlike many improv ensembles the trio privileges a meditative and even ‘melodic’ approach to improvisation in which silence, unvoiced sounds and the specific grains of the instruments become of paramount importance. Virginia Woolf’s literary experimentalism, Russian and English folk heritages, Pasolini’s poetry and cinema represent some of the most fascinating resources which nourish a sonic space or a conversational “party” constantly rethinking itself.
The trio has published two albums with FMR Recordings. The quartet with Stefano Luigi Mangia is part of a special project – “Apulian jazz players to perform in Great Britain”– for international exchange of jazz musicians funded by the Italian government.

Frequency Disasters : Steve Beresford (piano/electronics), Valentina Magaletti (drums) and Pierpaulo Martino (double bass)
With special guest Dave Tucker (electric guitar)

Frequency Disasters are pianist, improviser and composer Steve Beresford, percussionist Valentina Magaletti and bass player Pierpaolo Martino. The trio offers a carnivalesque approach to improvisation, where high and low culture, drama and irony ‘speak’ to each other, constantly redefining themselves and where normative approaches to frequency and sound are necessarily escaped. Mixing free jazz, noise, avant-garde and library music, the trio creates an imaginary soundtrack to a narrative nourished by literary suggestions of authors such as P.G. Wodehouse, Jeanette Winterson and Italo Calvino. The trio has published his first album with Confront Recrdings in 2020.
