Kate Carr (objects)
Kate Carr’s practice explores the encounters, textures and technologies entangled with field recording using movement, objects and experimental recording techniques. She creates intimate, delicate and hybrid soundworlds which centre the interactions and collectivity which generate soundscapes. She works across composition, performance and installation. Everything from vibrations caused by cars and footfalls, to overheard murmurs, public speeches, music in public space, and the roar of distant sporting events has found its way into her compositions, and live performances. Inspired by the layers, minglings and silences in our collective soundscapes, Carr is interested in composing works probe the soundscape for clues as to how we negotiate living together. She is particularly focused on hybrid soundscapes: where forest meets town, nuclear power plant meets wetland, booming car stereo meets residential street.
[something’s happening]
[something’s happening] is the sound and text duo of poet and performer Iris Colomb and composer Daryl Worthington (Beachers). The project explores textual and sonic permutation through improvisation. Fragments of found text and gestural electro-acoustics weave through spectral guitar textures. Loops of sound and language collide.
[something’s happening] have performed at venues including Cafe Oto and New River Studios, they have worked with promoters including Baba Yaga’s Hut, Upset The Rhythm, and Culture as a Dare alongside artists including Eric Chenaux, Matchess and Machinefabriek. Their first release, an album of single-take live improvisations recorded with a single mic in a practice room, ‘Something Like That’, was released in May 2022 by Sensory Leakage. Their second release, a recording of a live performance from October 2022 at Cafe Oto was recently released on the venue’s digital label Otoroku.
“Iris Colomb and composer Daryl Worthington blur together a stark palette that ends up being hopelessly engaging.” Brad Rose, Foxy Digitalis
