Cath Roberts / Otto Willberg / Tullis Rennie + Alexandertwatz. Friday 13th December 19:30

Cath Roberts / Otto Willberg / Tullis Rennie

In the only two previous public performances by this group, there were attempts at making music together by improvising whilst being distracted by small tasks, repetitive and/or banal instructions and games of hide and seek. Vocal utterances have been heard, including gurgling. Some teeth were nearly lost through sound-making, mostly by mistake. There were bits that some felt more uncomfortable about, but in a good, challenging way, and there were lots of moments of collective fun. There were also some very small reindeer, which may or may not make an appearance.

Alexandertwatz : Benedict Taylor (viola) & Stephen Crowe (electric guitar)

Benedict Taylor is a solo violist & film composer. As an improviser, he has worked with Evan Parker, Terry Day, Keith Tippett, Wadada Leo Smith, Alex Ward, Steve Beresford, Tom Jackson and Phil Minton. He has had residencies at Café Oto and is the founder of CRAM, a music collective and independent label.

Stephen Crowe is a composer of operas and experimental music. Performances of his work have been at Tate Britain, The National Portrait Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Vortex. He also sings in ‘StreisBAND’, a hardcore Barbra Streisand covers duo. Both gentlemen have embarrassingly set up their own Wikipedia pages in an attempt to appear more legitimate than they might be.

Otto Willberg (Double Bass)
Otto Willberg is a London based musician performing on the Double Bass. He currently performs with the funk/junk/punk band Historically Fucked, Alex Ward’s large groups, Andreae/Birchall///Willberg and leads the naive groove group Early Nite. He has recently toured with Cath Roberts, Nate Wooley and Mark Hanslip.

Cath Roberts (saxophone)
Cath Roberts’ work explores free improvisation, composition and the music at their meeting point. Her primary outlet as a composer and improviser on baritone saxophone is the quintet Sloth Racket, which has toured widely and released several albums. She leads ten piece improvising ensemble Favourite Animals, and has a long-standing duo with guitarist Anton Hunter, Ripsaw Catfish. As bandmate, Cath is a member of Madwort Sax Quartet, Vole, Article XI and Alex Ward’s Item 10 amongst other groups. She co-runs LUME with Dee Byrne, producing concerts, tours and festivals since 2013 and releasing music on an offshoot label, Luminous. Cath is also part of the group of musicians who run BRÅK, an improvised music series taking place in Brockley, South East London.

Tullis Rennie (trombone)
Tullis Rennie’s work encompasses sound installation, community-engaged participative projects, multi-channel concert works, video, mixed media and live/improvised performances. He plays with large improvising ensembles Article XI, Favourite Animals, and Union Division. He is co-founder of Walls On Walls with visual artist Laurie Nouchka, and a founder member of the Insectotròpics audio-visual collective, based in Barcelona. He recently began the multi.modal label with Claudia Molitor. He features on releases by the Luminous label, ZeroWave and Efpi Records.
