Trocado / Ward / Willberg / Lisle + Charlotte Keeffe & Crystabel Riley. Sunday 27th October 15:30

Nuno Trocado is a composer and guitarist crossing various contemporary musical constellations. He is particularly interested in the combination between the spontaneity of improvisation and the rigor of algorithmic composition. His work also focus on the multiple meanings of noise, and frequently entails collaborations with other musicians and with artists of different disciplines.

He was given a residency at the 2017 Guimarães Jazz festival, in which he created Cotovelo, a show crossing between music and theater. The recording was released on Porta-Jazz’s Carimbo label and supported by GDA Foundation. He has also composed for various instrumental ensembles and presented electro-acoustic works. His work 2458208, for ensemble and electronics, was recorded by the Ensemble de Música Contemporânia da ESMAE and the score published by MPMP. He’s a co-founder of the collective Pãodemónio, contributing guitar and electronic noises to both their albums released so far.

Tom Ward is a saxophonist/bass-clarinetist/flautist/composer. He has a keen interest in free improvisation, with several collaborative projects that have performed around the UK and Europe including Ma/ti/om (featuring Scandinavian percussionist Matilda Rolfsson), Cotovelo (led by Portugese guitarist Nuno Trocado) and the Tom Ward/Adam Fairhall duo. Alongside Cath Roberts & Colin Webster, Tom co-runs BRÅK, a night of freely improvised duo music at waterintobeer in Brockley, SE London.
Tom is also interested in intricate composition, in particular his groups Madwort Saxophone Quartet (**** – Guardian) and more recently Madwort’s Menagerie – a sextet comprising bass clarinet/flute/cornet/bari sax/cello/double bass.
Tom has performed with numerous improvising large ensembles in recent years, including Cath Robert’s Favourite Animals, Paulo Duarte’s Overground Collective, Laura Cole’s Metamorphic, Dirk Serries’ TONUS, Matt London’s Orchestra Entropy, Beats & Pieces Big Band, and more.

Charlotte Keeffe & Crystabel Riley

Charlotte Keeffe
Charlotte Keeffe’s unique approach to trumpet playing and passion for improvised/experimental/jazz music has led her to performing regularly across the UK and internationally. Inspired by the likes of Polish trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stańko, Charlotte’s latest project involves exploring and weaving together her new compositions inspiring creative freedom through experimental improvisation. Her new quartet features Alex Ward on guitar, Ashley John Long on double bass and Ben Handysides on drums. Charlotte’s collaboration with Alex Ward extends to his own Item Series projects, performing regularly alongside Bassist Otto Willberg and Drummer Andrew Lisle in Item 4 and Item 10.

Crystabel Riley
During the late naughties Crystabel Riley toured Japan and Europe using drums, electronics and make-up in noise trio Maria and the Mirrors. This was the start of her interest in patterns on skins – human and drum. She was later encouraged – and welcomed – into the Horse Improvised Music Club by Daniel Thompson and Sue Lynch respectively. This instantly consolidated into weekly playing with Sue, who she still collaborates with. She is currently working on the multi-format duo project @xcrswx with Seymour Wright. This contrasts the LIVE (evolved sounds / patience / relentless) and the ANDROID (cropped media [sounds+visuals] / impatience / InstantPublication).
