verz returns to Hundred Years Gallery with an afternoon of casual experimental sound, with solo sets from Kate Carr and Matt Atkins, and a duo by Bill Thompson & Phil Maguire.
Kate Carr’s work is focused on the links between sound, place and affect, and she works across composition, performance and installation. She is particularly interested in sound as a way of approaching broader processes of spatial constitution and contestation. Carr runs the sound art label Flaming Pines.
Matt Atkins is a London based sound and visual artist whose principle interests are reductionism, chance, repetition and texture. He uses objects, percussion instruments, occasionally a laptop and cassette recorders to create sound collages in both the recorded medium and live, often in collaborative performances.
Bill Thompson is a sound artist and composer. Although he originally trained as a guitarist, Thompson has worked with live electronics for over 20 years. In 2016 he returned to guitar (ala Moog) combining built in electronics with miscellaneous table top devices, found objects, flashing lights, and the occasional vibrator.
Phil Maguire is an artist from Scotland working with sound. Utilising computers, synthesisers, and tape equipment, Maguire produces music and sound works that explore emptiness and malfunction, of self and of machine. These works are informed by his experience composing, performing, and presenting works across the spectrum of minimalism. He runs verz, a tape label and concert series.
verz is a label and concert series founded in 2016, exploring quiet music and sound art. It has since expanded its focus to include minimalist and sustained-tone experimental music and sound.
