Alex Ward Quintet. Sunday 8th May 3:30-6:30pm

Quintet

Olie Brice: double bass
Tom Jackson: clarinet and bass clarinet
Hannah Marshall: cello
Rachel Musson: tenor saxophone
Alex Ward: clarinet, guitar, compositions

The Alex Ward Quintet was formed in 2013 to perform the extended composition “Glass Shelves And Floor”, two versions of which were subsequently released as the group’s debut album on Copepod Records in 2015 (“a terrific album” – The Quietus; “deft and utterly mesmeric” – The Guardian). SInce then, Ward has continued to write for the ensemble, and this concert will feature some of his latest pieces exploring new approaches to the integration of improvisation and composition. The line-up of the quintet comprises several of the most exciting UK-based musicians working in these fields, and conjures up a soundworld evocative of contemporary chamber music, whilst injecting it with the vigour and raw exploration of free improvisation.
