‘It is at work everywhere, functioning smoothly at times, at other times in fits and starts. It breathes, it heats, it eats. It shits and fucks. What a mistake to have ever said the id. Everywhere it is machines — real ones, not figurative ones: machines driving other machines, machines being driven by other machines, with all the necessary couplings and connections’. Gilles Deleuze : Anti-oedipus: capitalism and schizophrenia
Chris Godber is a multidisciplinary artist and painter based in London, whose ongoing fine art practice is driven by a fascination with the aesthetics of expressionism, outsider art, technology and philosophy and how to create figurative and semi-abstract paintings, drawings and digital artworks that combine all these influences into something new.
As a painter he is drawn to portraying the world around him in a way that takes the raw materiality of the objects in reality and transforms them; therefore energy is a concern in his artistic practice – the energy of movement, of presence, of being.
Metamorph is a collection of selected paintings and drawings made during 2014 – 2019 all of which explore visual ideas of altered perceptions, transformations and metamorphosis of the organic with the machine, the dream with the real, the chaotic depths of the subjective imagination bleeding into the objective. All the work has in common varying portrayals of mutation and distortion in an effort to unveil new mental spaces which he hopes seem familiar yet uncanny to the viewer.
Opening: Thursday 23rd May 6:30 – 9:30
