Film : Rita Says / Roland Denning : The Great Learning 2018. Friday 7th December 19:00

Rita Says presents the first public screening of Roland Denning’s documentary “50 Years On: Cornelius Cardew’s The Great Learning 2018, live at Limehouse Town Hall“.

This unique and beautiful film – lit, shot and edited by Roland Denning (with sound mixed live and recorded by Adem Ali) captures the October 20th 2018 performance of Rita Says and The Jerico Orchestra‘s interpretation of Paragraphs 7,4 and 2 from Cornelius Cardew’s The Great Learning. Using a cast of predominantly untrained participants (who explored the piece during workshops over a 4 month run up) the film movingly captures the drama and deep sonic power of Cardew’s seminal 1960s composition. Color/Monochrome superimposition and extreme closeups are used to create a cinematic document (of a very special event) that is totally contemporary whilst referencing the movies of Antonioni and Warhol.
