Gillberg Variations is the latest piece written by composer/improviser/academic Si Paton for two clarinets, two saxophones and two trombones (because two of everything makes it louder). In tribute to lovable professional wrestling jobber Duane ‘Gillberg’ Gill, the twenty-three short works (many of which are less than a minute in length) present Paton’s love of grindcore music within a fully acoustic environment. Despite the influence of groups such as Extreme Noise Terror, Naked City and The Locust marking their fingerprints all over the work, the music also pinches elements of twelve tone composition, post-metal and skronky free improv. To do this, Paton has enlisted a bunch of tremendous performers/improvisers who, between them, have played in groups such as: Sloth Racket, Nerija, Selectric, Ripsaw Catfish, Mimika, Madwort, White Flower, Op Sa, Arcadio, Pack of Wolves Arkestra and probably loads more.
S Paton – composition
Tom Ward – bass clarinet

This performance will also function as a live recording which will be released at some point in the not too distant future.
