Breathing Heavy is the London-based duo of Sam Andreae (alto saxophone) and Ciaran Mackle (sampler), whose work channels a restless, high-intensity approach to improvised music. Since forming in 2021, they have developed a tightly interlocked practice in which live saxophone and sampled reeds are pushed into rapid, unstable dialogue—Andreae’s playing veering from wiry lyricism to forceful, grainy bursts, while Mackle manipulates clipped, looping fragments into dense, kinetic surfaces. Their performances unfold at a near-constant pitch of urgency, with overlapping patterns, sudden ruptures and fleeting motifs generating a vivid sense of motion and accumulation.

Drawing on an approach that treats each performance as part of a larger, ongoing continuum, Breathing Heavy create music that feels both immediate and ever-expanding. Their interplay blurs origin and outcome—sounds fold into one another, structures teeter and reform, and moments of near-collapse intensify the focus of their exchange. Releases including Heavy Breathing (Infant Tree, 2023) and not bad (Otoroku, 2025) capture this volatile, symbiotic dynamic, where jagged, tessellating forms and bursts of frenetic energy coalesce into a singular, immersive whole.
